Mid-Week Spritz - 1

I thought I would start a small series of motivational quotes and pictures every Wednesday in order to help keep me on track to achieving my hair goals. Sometimes a small image can real help. So heres to Campus Hair's first Mid-Week Spritz!

"Every accomplishment starts with the decision to try."

Sometimes the hardest part for me in achieving my goals is to simply get started. For example with my fitness it is hard simply to get myself out of my bed or away from the computer and get moving. This also applies greatly to my hair. Excuses like "I'll wash my hair tomorrow," or "It'll look fine if I leave it like this," keep me from achieving my goals and hurts my hairs health in the long run. Its time for me to stop these excuse and do what must be done. Now.

Oh! And it is New Years' Eve today. This is a great time to motivate yourself to get started!

Seven Pounds - Emily Posa's Hair

I saw the movie Seven Pounds, movie with Will Smith, today. The main female character Emily Posa, played by Rosario Dawson, has very pretty hair. I really liked her hair in the date scene. It was styled in a very cute chignon and had some hair pins in it. Very cute!

Homemade Mondays - Sweeter Than Molasses

Molasses is a great natural ingredient to use for hair that has been damaged or mistreated. This common kitchen ingredient will both soften and strengthen your hair. I personally use this almost every week in my prepoo treatment. The best kind is Blackstrap Molasses this term only refers to the way the sugar can is processed so you can find this in almost any grocery store on the syrup and honey aisle.

Here is an easy recipe for using Molasses as a prepoo.
  • 1/2 Cup Molasses
  • 1/2 Cup of your Favorite prepoo conditioner
  • 1 TBS of your favorite oil (optional)
Stir this mixture and apply to your hair. Put on a plastic cap and stay like this for and hour or more. Be careful because this mixture can be pretty messy. I recommend using an old t-shirt and towel when applying.

Rinse out the mixture in the shower and enjoy the benefits of stronger hair that shouldn't shed or break nearly as much.

Whats In Store

I'm really stuck right now deciding what to do with my hair. As a lot of African American women are when they go to the salon. I like to stick with a certain hairstylist. Only thing is, I've moved. Now I'm up in Georgia with 8 weeks worth new growth, no one to go to, and a new semester in the horizon. Whats a girl to do?

I'm thinking about braiding up my hair. But I'll have to do it myself and I really don't have the motivation to do that. Since it'll be on me I'm going to take longer do to my habit of taking frequent breaks. So I'll have to give myself three days. Too much time and I have so many other things to do.

My cousins goes to a lady who I can get my hair done by. But I don't really like her. Shes more looks oriented and isn't to concerned with the health of the hair where I am.

Its so much stuff conflicting and I really don't know what to do. I need to decided by Tuesday.

Wash Day

Another wash day. Today I used a molasses and honey mixture in my hair. It worked out very well I believe. Then I washed with my Creme of Nature Shampoo. Conditioned with Herbal Essences Long Term Relationship, and deep conditioned with an ORS Replenishing Pak.

Right now I'm sitting airdrying with a few bantu knots in my head. I plan on just wearing my hair in a bun until my next wash. I'm looking for low maintenance since I have a lot of new growth to be dealing with.

More Poof

Again continuing with what I've been discussing the past couple of days. Today I wore a poof. I haven't washed my hair in a week so this twist out is very old. So I made a little poof in the front, smoothed the sides down and brought the rest of my hair up in a ponytail. It was pretty cute.

I'm telling you this is one very easy and cute hair remedy.

Hump Video

Continuing on with what I spoke about in my last post here are some video tutorial on doing a hump that I found on youtube.

Here is another one rather long but its still cute in the end. Only thing I don't like is that she teases her hair to get more volume. Its very unnecessary. Teasing is very damaging to all hair and even more so to black hair.

Hair Tip - 12/26/08 - The Hump

When your style is starting to get old and its getting about that time for another wash what can you do to spruce your look up? One simple idea is to add a hump to the front of your hair. For me this is one of my favorite ways to my an old twist out look stylish. The steps to do this are very simple.
  1. First moisturize and seal your hair.
  2. Then section off a part of hair from roughly the top of one eyebrow to the other.
  3. Take this section and twist it around, then push it forward. This should create the hump.
  4. Make your hump as high or low as you like.
  5. Secure your new hump with two crisscrossed bobby pins or dress it up with a small hair clip instead.
Simple isn't it. So go and try it for yourself.

I'm Back

I guess its safe to say that I'm back. I'm currently in an apartment that has internet, until we move. But that won't be until I get back to campus. So I will be able to start posting regularly again.

There has been a death in the family and that combined with finals, and moving has really made these past couple of weeks very hectic.

I have slacked with my hair when it comes to washing and moisturizing. But I'm trying to make up for that slack. Other than a slight case of dryness my hair is doing very well and I already have a good amount of new growth. I believe thats really due to me just not manipulating my hair as much. I'm currently 8 weeks and still don't plan on getting a touch up anytime soon.

Well thats it for my update. Expect my regular posting now.

Finals Time

I thought I should post a quick update. The reason I haven't been posting is because its finals time here on campus. And its been pretty rough lately. I'm surprised that I've found time to breath. So do expect me back soon. My last exam is next Wednesday.

Only thing is that I'm moving from Miami to Georgia next Friday so I'm not to sure I'll have internet up there.

Wish me luck! And I'll be back!

Hair Tip - 12/6/08

Following my post about me straightening my hair, here is a tip when flat ironing.

Flat ironing can be very dangerous to you hair, so it is important to take care of it. An easy way to avoid unnecessary damage is to turn the heat down. Smoke coming from your strands when you flat iron is not a good thing. What I do is turn my heat all the way down in the move it up just a tad bit.

I also ensure that I only go through each strand once. If you make a pass through your hair slowly and steadily it will come out straight and on the first run through avoiding singeing your strands.

Another tip, when you get to your ends loosen your the flat irons grip, this way you won't risk pulling any strands.

One last tip, always, always, always, use a heat protectant. I cannot stress this enough. Make it a rule to yourself to never let heat touch your hair without some heat protectant product being in it.

Using common sense and these tips you can have straight hair and avoid damaging your lovely locs.

Straightened My Hair

I ended up straightening my hair on my last wash day Tuesday. I was rushed during my flat ironing process so it didn't come out as good. But after two nights of wrapping it, it looks much better.

It feels good to have my hair straight, and it looks pretty good. I kinda miss it even thought its more maintenance then my twist-outs.
