Ends Tip

Here is a simple tip for keeping your ends moisturized. Works great for any "out" style (braidout, twistout)

Take a thick moisturizing condtitioner and apply it to your ends. I tend to apply to the last 1 1/2" of my hair. Let that soak for about 5 min. Then seal with oil. I use coconut oil since it absorbs into the strands.

My Hair Today

The result of a cowash (protein beforehand) and 4 braids.
My braidouts always act better after a cowash versus how it comes out after a shampoo.

Protein Confession

I have been bad. In the pursuit of simplying my hair routine to the bare minimum I have neglected to provide it with enough protein. My hair life these past few months has just basically been wash, condition, cowash, braidout. Every night I get back too late to have time to incorporate all the steps. So, because of all of this my hair has suffered.

I noticed it a few last week during my detangling. I was losing quite a bit of hair. I thought it was just cause I haven't washed in 5 days. But I noticed it again on Sunday. Thats when I realized that I haven't been giving my hair any protein. Its just been straight up moisture. My hair doesn't feel mushy like over-moisturized hair would feel. But it doesn't have that toughness that hair with enough protein would have.

So now I'm on a long road back to strengthing my strands. Today I applied Aussie 3 min reconstructer and there is a definite difference. I shall be incorporating protein weekly now, most likely during my cowashes.

I will not let this happen again.

Homemade Mondays - Face the E

I've recently purchased a bottle of Vitamin E. I have been using it a few times a week on my face and I am noticing a difference. So this weeks Homemade Monday is all about Vitamin E recipes.

Dry Skin Facial
  • 1 Egg Yolk
  • 1 tbs Honey
  • 1 small cap of olive oil
  • Pea-sized amount of Vitamin E
Mix ingredients together, apply to face, and leave for 15 minutes. Wash off with warm water.

Jojoba Hair Conditioner
  • 1 Cup Rose Water
  • 1 tbs Jojoba Oil
  • 10 Drops Vitamin E
Warm the rose water. Then add Jojoba and Vitamin E. Apply to scalp and leave in for desired amount of time. Rinse out with warm water, then Shampoo or Cowash. Make sure the mixture isn't hot before applying.

Getting to the Roots

I will be 11 weeks post this Saturday. I didn't even plan on stretching, but things just seemed to work out this way. I've gone home twice this semester and didn't make an appointment either time, so now I'm dealing with 11 weeks of new growth. You can imagine how much there is.

However, I'm not really struggling that much with it. Every since I started my hair care journey, new growth doesn't effect me as much. Curly styles are a life saver. Cowashing is a life saver. And Coconut oil is a lifesaver.

One major tip I have for those that are having trouble stretching is to make sure you get to your roots.

Personally, I tend to get lazy and don't bother making sure I apply pre-poo to my roots, or deep condition them either. But I end up paying for it when I'm wearing my hair out. Those roots become dry and unmanageble.

Its a very simple and obvious idea, but the application is tedious. Time to stop being so lazy and make sure that I get to the root of things.
